Northland’s six-monthly tsunami siren test will take place at the beginning of daylight saving on Sunday 24 September 2023.
The sirens sound twice:
- 10 minutes at 10am, and
- 30 seconds at 10.30am
The purpose of the test is to monitor for faults and so there is nothing you need to do. However, now is a good time to put together your whanau’s tsunami plan. Know where your closest evacuation zone is. Make sure your plan includes stock and pets.
Northland’s outdoor tsunami sirens are funded and owned by the region’s three district councils (Far North, Whangarei and Kaipara) and operated in a partnership that includes Northpower and Top Energy.
The Northland network has been progressively developed since 2007, with a total of 205 sirens installed over that time. There are five sirens on the Peninsula.
